Have you spotted the first humpback whales of the season yet?
This Sunday 28 June, locals are being encouraged to head to Warden Head and join thousands of Australians taking part in ORRCA’s 27th Annual Whale Census.
Each winter, the waters off the South Shoalhaven become a highway for migrating humpback whales as they make their journey north to warmer breeding grounds. The annual census is a chance for everyday people to help count these incredible ocean travellers while enjoying one of the South Coast’s most spectacular natural events.
Organised by ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia), the census collects valuable information about whale numbers, migration patterns and behaviour. Every sighting helps contribute to a better understanding of humpback populations and supports ongoing conservation efforts.
There are two ways to get involved.
The first is the coordinated Abundance Count, taking place between 10am and 12pm at designated survey locations, including Warden Head in Ulladulla. Volunteers work together during this two-hour window to help estimate the number of whales moving along the coastline.
The second option is the traditional Passage Count, where participants choose a favourite lookout and record whale sightings throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset.
Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or simply looking for an excuse to spend a few hours by the ocean, the census is a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and contribute to a genuine citizen science project.
The South Coast is renowned for its whale watching, and there’s something special about standing on the headland with binoculars in hand, waiting for that unmistakable blow, tail slap or breach on the horizon.
Participants who register will receive a Census Day Kit, including whale identification resources and instructions for recording sightings using ORRCA’s data collection app.
So pack a thermos, bring your binoculars and rug up for a morning at Warden Head. You might just help count one of the thousands of humpback whales making their way past our coastline this winter.
