Christmas Cheer, Powered by Volunteers (and probably coffee)

Published By

It’s that time of year when the South Shoalhaven turns on the sparkle – and by sparkle, we mean lots of locals rolling up their sleeves, wrangling tinsel, setting up fairy lights, and somehow getting Santa to commit to multiple appearances… all without being paid a cent. Here are a few of the absolute gems happening around town this December, brought to you lovingly by volunteers (and possibly mild panic) (p.s. – I’ll keep on adding more to this story as we hear more events pop up!)

Community Christmas Carols – part of ‘Spirit of Christmas’ Festival
Saturday 13 December | 6pm | Ulladulla Civic Centre

Grab your picnic rug, fold-up chairs and festive outfit that seemed like a good idea online. Expect collaboration at its finest:

  • Christmas Wonderland downstairs
  • Trees wrapped in hand-knitted garlands
  • The iconic harbourside ‘Spirit of Christmas’ tree, lighting up the night
  • Santa dropping in with treats and photo ops

It’s community magic at its best. Brought to you by the Business Milton Ulladulla  Chambers, Muck Up, Milton Ulladulla Christmas Yarn Bombing and so many wonderful community members.

Ulladulla Christmas Wonderland Spectacular
13–14 December & 19–24 December | 4:30–9:30pm | Ulladulla Civic Centre

Launched last year and instantly became the must-visit family event. The downstairs of the Civic Centre is completely transformed into a festive dreamland – think twinkly lights, Santa meet-and-greets, and the kind of joy that makes kids wide-eyed and parents slightly emotional. My two boys were thrilled last year. 100% volunteer-run. 100% delightful. 0% chance you’ll leave without humming carols for the rest of the night. Find our more info here.

Chorus 4 Kindness V
Thursday 18 December | Milton Theatre

If you’re after sore cheeks from smiling, this is the night for you. MUCK UP (Milton Ulladulla Community Kindness Project) is back, teaming up with Apex Club and Sing Express for another unforgettable evening. Led by the fabulous Tina Broad, the entire audience forms a choir and learns an Aussie rock classic on the spot. No experience necessary – enthusiasm compulsory. Bring the kids, bring the grandparents, bring that neighbour who always sings too loudly. All funds raised go towards future MUCK UP initiatives. Entirely volunteer run. Entirely wholesome.

Who’s the star? You are (yes… even if you only sing in the car). This books out super quick – so what are you waiting for – book now here!

NSW RFS Milton Brigade Santa Run

The official Venn diagram of childhood excitement: Santa + Fire Engines. The dates are usually announced a few days before the big guy starts his rounds, so keep an eye on the Milton Brigade Facebook page and signs around town. Sirens, smiles and a Santa sighting – it doesn’t get more local or more loved.

Have I missed any other wonderful festive events run by volunteers? Of course I have – email me at kate@communityconnectss.com.au and I’ll update this post!
