Halfway Through the Year: A Simple Reflection Activity for Community Groups

Published By

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the year.

For many community groups, the first six months can feel like a whirlwind of meetings, events, grant applications, fundraising, volunteer coordination and trying to keep everything moving forward. Often, we move straight from one activity to the next without taking time to pause and recognise what we’ve achieved along the way.

A mid-year reflection doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, some of the most valuable conversations happen when a group simply takes an hour together to look back, celebrate progress and think about what comes next.

Whether you’re a sporting club, volunteer group, arts organisation or local NFP, this simple reflection activity can help your team reconnect with its purpose, reflect on learnings and get ready for the second half of the year.

Why Reflect?
Reflection helps groups:

  • Celebrate successes that might otherwise be overlooked.
  • Recognise volunteers and contributions.
  • Learn from challenges and setbacks.
  • Reconnect with the group’s purpose and goals.
  • Identify priorities for the next six months.
  • Strengthen relationships and team culture.

The Mid-Year Reflection Activity
Gather your committee, volunteers or members around a table (food helps!) and spend 30–60 minutes working through these questions.

1. What are we proud of? At Community Connect – we love asking this question – there is often so much gold that is surfaced in these answers.

2. What surprised us? What happened that we didn’t expect?

3. What has been difficult? (note: The goal isn’t to solve everything immediately, but to understand what’s happening.)

4. Who has helped us along the way?
Take time to acknowledge people. How can you share this acknowedgement beyond the meeting?

5. What matters most for the next six months?
Imagine it’s December. What would make you feel proud of the rest of the year?

Choose one to three priorities rather than a long list, and focus on what is realistic, meaningful and achievable.

6. What support do we need?
What skills, resources, partnerships or support could help you achieve your goals?Sometimes simply naming what you need is the first step towards finding it.

One Final Question
Before you finish, ask everyone to share one word describing how they are feeling about the rest of the year.

You might hear words like hopeful, excited, focused, energised or connected.

And if you don’t? That’s useful information too.

Reflection isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about understanding where you are, celebrating how far you’ve come and choosing where to focus next.
