“Can I go through the maze one more time?” my eldest asked before dashing off with his friends and little brother. I saw them in pure delight finding their way through the maze. While they were occupied I gazed out over the kids area created by the wonderful Milton Show Junior Committee, it was such a delight. Kids exploring being farmers, some racing off to get treats from the P&C marquees, others lining up for the Lions merry go round.
Youth committees are FANTASTIC. They are a great way for young people to get involved in community groups in a safe and supportive environment. Just like team sports bring youth together over a shared passion, these committees create opportunities for young people to collaborate, develop leadership skills, and make meaningful contributions to the community, while having fun.
In Milton, Ulladulla & Mollymook, we’re lucky to have several youth-led groups making a real impact. Committees such as Treading Lightly Youth Committee, MuckUP, and Milton Show Society Junior Committee give young people a platform to express ideas, develop initiatives from the ground up, and gain experience in planning and decision-making. Undoubtable the events these Youth Committees are creating show a splash of real creativity and innovation that young voices bring to the table.
A key benefit of youth committees is that they allow young people to actively shape projects rather than just assist in their execution. They get to identify their strengths, recognise areas where they need support, and work alongside mentors who can guide and encourage them.
Combine this with the backing and support from established organisations is a recipe for success, pure enjoyment, pride in our wonderful community and real hope for the future of our local community. Young people have incredible ideas—fresh, creative, and forward-thinking. By giving them the space to be heard, we build a stronger, more engaged community.
