About dragon boating
Dragon boat racing is a team-based watersport involving 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer, propelling a dragon boat, dressed with a dragon’s head and tails, through the water. Watch this video for more information about the sport of dragon boat racing in NSW.
About Nowra Waterdragons Dragon Boat Club
- Started in 2005 in Nowra.
- Shoalhaven’s most success dragon boating club.
- Race dragon boats competitively.
- Offer competitive and social training sessions.
- Training bases in Nowra and Sydney.
- Current Australian Championship Crew in 50+ yrs, mixed category (combined men and women).
- Current NSW State Champion Crew in 50+ yrs, opens category (mostly men).
- Elite paddlers are regularly selected to Australian National Team (called Auroras) and NSW State Team.
- Compete in 40+, 50+, 60+ and 70+ years categories.
- Offering 6 training sessions a week: 3 in Nowra and 3 in Sydney.
- Welcome social paddlers, too, including in the “premier age” category (18+ to 39 years) .
- A lift club is available for southern Shoalhaven paddlers (from Ulladulla, Mollymook, Burrill, Milton and Yatte Yattah).
- Current crew members come from all across the Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Sydney.

We run an annual Come Try Dragon Boating program in Spring, before the state of the competitive season. It’s free. It’s run over 4 sessions on Saturday mornings in Nowra. Registration is essential. Email us for more information.
