When the curtain rises on Magic, Myths and Mayhem next month, audiences can expect rabbits, shadow puppets, live music and a touch of theatrical illusion. But according to Entertainers member Matt Dell, the real magic happens long before the lights come on.“It’s seeing everyday people like your neighbour, your school teacher, someone you know up on stage with full lights, full sound and beautiful costuming,” he said. “That’s the thing that makes Entertainers a little bit magic every year.”
This year’s production leans into fantasy and illusion, with songs, visuals and magical moments woven together through a playful storyline designed to entertain audiences of all ages. “It really is a show for all ages this year,” Matt said. “The kids will really enjoy it. But I think everyone walks away having had a really fun night.”
The latest Entertainers production will bring together close to 100 local people – performers, musicians, dancers, costume makers, backstage crew and volunteers – for what has become one of the South Coast’s most enduring community fundraising traditions. Behind the scenes, volunteers sew costumes, build props, run the bar, set up lighting rigs and help transform ordinary community members into performers.
That collective effort is what continues to make Entertainers so special. “It’s by community, for community. It’s locals looking after ourselves.” That sense of community extends well beyond the performers on stage.
Behind the spectacle of stage lights and costumes sits something much bigger than a performance. Over the last almost 40 years, the Milton Ulladulla Entertainers has grown into a major local fundraising initiative, donating over $1.5 million back into community projects and organisations across the region. Last year alone, Entertainers donated $50,000 to local community groups and scholarships, with almost 40 organisations expected to benefit again this year.
“It’s not just a ticket to a great show, it’s a donation”
Many audience members are surprised to discover how much of their ticket price goes directly back into the community. “We have great support from sponsors which means your $45 ticket is almost entirely going to 40 local groups,” Matt said. “It’s not just a ticket to a great show, it’s a donation.”
